Smart Cities: A Special Paradigm of Modern Social Life By: By Arindam Sengupta ,Senior Academic Coordinator,HOD Geography of DPS Fulbari

Since the dawn of civilization, socialized human beings have established settlements across the globe driven by necessity. Although these early settlements were not specifically categorized at their inception, the passage of time, changing human

demands, and variations in resource utilization led to the distinct development of rural and urban habitats. In alignment with the upward trajectory of human civilization, technological advancements have gradually drawn people more toward urban living. However, an analysis of urban growth patterns over the last few decades reveals that the structural framework of cities has significantly changed and evolved due to the rapid advancement of technology. As a result, various types of urban settlements—differing in size and function—such as Towns, Cities, Megacities, and Cosmopolitans, have emerged. The recent emergence of the Smart City has essentially woven every aspect of human life into a technological web. The concept of a Smart City primarily utilizes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and various devices connected via internet networks to master the efficiency of urban operations and services, facilitating direct engagement with citizens.

In these areas, various electronic methods and sensors are used to collect specific data. Based on the insights gained from this data, various services are managed efficiently. Furthermore, this information is extensively used to improve the city’s overall

infrastructure, including:

  • Traffic and transportation systems
  • Electrical services and power supply
  • Water supply and waste management
  • Criminal investigation and public safety

In June 2015, the Government of India launched the Smart Cities Mission. Its primary objective was to develop cities to meet international standards in terms of infrastructure and economic growth. Some of India’s top smart cities include Bhubaneswar, Amritsar, Pune, Jaipur, Kochi, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Indore, and Hyderabad. To enhance the quality of life and ensure the continuity of basic amenities, smart cities are expanding extensively. It is expected that this trend will significantly influence the structural pattern of global settlements in the coming days.Important Links:
